Mets could skimp at two of three spots this offseason, per the piece. At first base, the minimum is a right-handed bat upgrading on Mark Vientos, with Paul Goldschmidt floated as the realistic platoon option. Second base (Semien/Baty) is also in play. 🧩
Xzavion Curry's 2026 made little sense: a minor-league signee who led Triple-A Syracuse with a 3.36 ERA, then posted a 5.48 ERA over 21.1 innings for the Mets, with one rough Orioles outing skewing it. Still, he likely earned another year. 🎲
Mets prospect Gary Gill Hill, a 21-year-old righty acquired from the Rays in the Freddy Peralta deal, is now at Double-A Binghamton. He's the system's No. 19 prospect, with a deep pitch mix and 60-grade control. 🎯
Michael King opted out of his Padres deal and hits free agency again, fresh off a 3.21 ERA across 185 innings and 32 starts, plus a 0.64 postseason ERA. Durability worries eased, so the market should be crowded. A rotation target worth tracking. ⚾
Mets' farm may lack top-100 shine, but it's deeper than it looked. Trey Snyder (.736 OPS across three levels, ending in High-A) and Channing Austin (2.26 ERA, Double-A) are 2027 breakout candidates. Depth chart sleepers. 👀
Bold offseason prediction: the Mets and Yankees could battle in trade talks for Astros slugger Isaac Paredes, who hit .262 with 25 HR and 94 RBI. He could slide to first base in Queens. A looming Dec. 1 CBA expiration threatens a lockout. 🔥
Mets claimed RHP Pierson Ohl off waivers from the Rockies, a Twins 2021 14th-rounder from Derek Falvey's old shop. Ohl missed all of 2026 after Tommy John surgery, but posted a 2.40 minor-league ERA in 2025. Colorado's loss, Queens' arm. ⚾
In 2015, the Mets led late in Games 1, 4 and 5 of the World Series but couldn't close against the Royals. Looking back, the column faults Terry Collins for leaving Harvey in for the ninth in Game 5. It calls 2015 a painful "what if?" 🔙
Mets enter a crucial offseason with free agency now open. Tarik Skubal is reportedly expected to sign before the Dec. 1 lockout, with the Mets seen as serious suitors. Ten arbitration decisions loom by mid-November, and Carson Benge is an NL Rookie of the Year finalist. 🍎
The Mets signed infielder Christian Cairo to a one-year major league deal and claimed pitchers Jack Anderson and Pierson Ohl off waivers. Pache and Wagaman were outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse, while Garrett, Megill and Polanco came off the 60-day IL. 🔄
Speculation, not signings: the Mets are linked to Ty France and Adrian Morejon, but first base depth (Jared Young) and qualifying-offer penalties could keep both away. France is 32 with a .686 OPS from 2023-2025, and his big 2026 looks like an outlier. 🧐
A fan column argues the Mets' 2027 rotation isn't yet top-tier: starters posted a 4.57 ERA and 4.88 innings per outing last year. McLean (3.16 ERA, 179.2 IP) is the lone sure thing; Manaea's 4.78 ERA is a red flag. Hope, but hedge. 🤔
Mets designated infielder Christian Cairo for assignment hours after announcing his one-year major league deal. The 25-year-old, claimed off waivers from Philadelphia in September, has never played in the majors. Fastest turnaround of the offseason. 🔄
The Mets designated Kyren Paris for assignment on Monday, part of a busy roster-trim day as free agency opened. The 4-year MLB veteran, recently claimed off waivers, had a very short stay in Queens. 🔄
The Mets designated Kyren Paris and Christian Cairo for assignment on the first day of free agency. The moves are procedural, cutting the 40-man roster back to exactly 40. Paris, recently claimed off waivers, lasted barely a cameo. 🔄
MLB Trade Rumors (Mets): Mets Designate Kyren Paris, Christian Cairo For Assignment
Mets opened the offseason with small moves: signed IF Christian Cairo to a one-year split deal and claimed RHPs Jack Anderson and Pierson Ohl on waivers. Megill, Garrett and Polanco came off the 60-day IL; Wagaman elected free agency. 🧹
Heavy Sports Mets: Report: New York Mets Acquire 27-Year-Old Pitcher Before Free Agency
Clay Holmes, traded by the Mets to the Cubs before this year's deadline, declined his $12M player option and hits free agency. After a 74-88 last-place finish, a reunion is only speculation, but the Mets do need pitching. 🔄
A rival NL scout reportedly sees Brewers free agent Jake Bauers (.874 OPS, 26 HR in 2026) as a fit at first base for the Mets. Still, a multi-year deal for a late bloomer and negative defender should give David Stearns pause. 🤔
