Red Sox defense got its due: Boston and Arizona led all teams with three Gold Gloves apiece in the 2026 awards. Cubs center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong took his second straight, but Boston's glovework drew plenty of its own hardware. 🧤
Caleb Durbin, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela all won Gold Gloves, giving Boston three winners for the first time since 2018. Durbin is only the second Sox third baseman to win one, after Frank Malzone. Abreu has won in each of his three full seasons. 🧤
Franklin Arias, Boston's top prospect and MLB's No. 2 overall, won a 2026 Minor League Gold Glove at shortstop. He made just five errors in 117 games across Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, and added 25 homers with a .957 OPS. 🧤
Jarren Duran's trade value has sunk after a .207 season, so Boston could be better off keeping him. He still brings 20 homers, 21 steals and strong defense, plus insurance if Roman Anthony gets hurt again. Low offers make a deal tough to justify. 🔒
Red Sox picked up Garrett Whitlock's $8.25M option for 2027 instead of a $1M buyout. He posted a 1.72 ERA over 54 appearances with 59 strikeouts and nine walks, and he's expected to be ready for spring training after pitching through a fractured tibia. 🔒
Red Sox could revisit their failed 2025 deadline pursuit of Joe Ryan to replace free-agent Sonny Gray in 2027. Ryan, a Twins righty entering his contract year, posted a 3.79 ERA over 144.2 innings and would fix a rotation that's nearly all lefties. 🎯
Ex-Red Sox starter Nick Pivetta is a free agent after the Padres declined his $14 million option. An elbow flexor strain limited him to eight starts in 2026, though he closed strong with a 1.45 ERA in four September starts. San Diego hasn't ruled out a reunion. 🔁
Ex-Red Sox outfielder Tommy Pham elected free agency on Oct. 29, per MLB.com. He split 2026 between the Mets and White Sox, and he's now open to sign with any club. His Boston stint came back in 2022. 🔎
A column argues the Red Sox should consider trading Franklin Arias, MLB's No. 2 prospect, this offseason while his stock peaks. The case: Boston leans too heavily on young "saviors," and the Big Three's mixed results show the risk. This is opinion, not a reported deal. 🤔
Early 2027 power rankings from ESPN and The Athletic both slot the Red Sox fifth, offering some relief after the Wild Card sweep by the Yankees. Pitching, defense, youth and prospect Franklin Arias drive the optimism. 📈
Red Sox offseason begins: the Brewers wrapped up the World Series, and a Sunday column says roster reconfiguration is underway with the CBA expiring in a month. Former Sox bench piece David Hamilton helped Milwaukee close it out. 🔄
Looking back at 2026: Roman Anthony tripled, then slid home on a Ceddanne Rafaela sac fly to tie the game on August 31. Trevor Story's walk-off single followed. It was peak "both are back," before September slumps and Anthony's finger injury undid it. 🎭
Willson Contreras says the Red Sox need "some more offense" for 2027, leaving the specifics to Craig Breslow. 🔧 His case has weight: he led Boston with a .902 OPS, 27 HR and 81 RBI. Breslow has roughly a month before a likely Dec. 1 lockout.
Former Red Sox first baseman Dominic Smith elected free agency on Oct. 29 after hitting .253 with nine homers and 46 RBIs in 108 games for the Braves. His Boston stint: 84 games in 2024. Another chapter closed. 📕
Christian Vazquez, the 2018 World Series-winning Red Sox catcher, has elected free agency after a down 2026 with Houston. The 36-year-old has a narrow window to land a 2027 job, with his agent reportedly seeking a deal before a possible lockout. ⏳
Red Sox hired ex-Astros coach Jason Bell, 36, as their first addition to Chad Tracy's 2027 staff. He'll work with the outfielders, replacing Pablo Cabrera, a group featuring Anthony, Abreu and Rafaela. His exact title is TBD. 🧤
Red Sox reportedly remain selective on Franklin Arias, with The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey saying Boston would need to be "blown away" to deal him. The No. 2 prospect in baseball hit .323/.400/.557 with 25 homers, so only a true star would likely do. 🔒
Joc Pederson declined his $18.5M mutual option with Texas, and Boston could pursue the 34-year-old DH after he hit 26 homers this season. The Red Sox ranked 26th in homers, but a signing would reportedly hinge on moving Yoshida and Duran. 💥
Willson Contreras says the Red Sox "need some more offense" after their Wild Card Series exit to the Yankees, calling it Craig Breslow's job to figure out. Boston ranked 26th in homers and 23rd in runs, though injuries to Anthony, Story and others played a big part. 🔧
Willson Contreras says he met with Chad Tracy and Craig Breslow after his Wild Card analytics critique, calling it constructive: "Things are in a good place." Sonny Gray's early hook still stings, but the clubhouse leader and front office look aligned. 🤝
